PRESS RELEASE: Waves Permitting, Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series Event #2 To Kakaako Waterfront PDF Print E-mail

Honolulu, Hawaii-

Waves permitting, the second event on the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series is set to run this weekend, May 31st, June 1st at the spot known as "Flies" off the Kakaako Waterfront Park. Running on Saturday once again will be the pro longboard heats as well as the open standup paddle division.

Should it go, you can pretty much assure the confidence level in the competitors will be high with cash prize money up for grabs in the pro division lead by Ikaika Kalama, winner of the first longboard event at Sunset Beach in April.

For the SUP crew, from a strategy stand (up) point, longer boards will be the call for the little right-handers expected on Saturday. As always, with this highly competitive group within the Hawaiian paddle surf community, expect to see some position jockeying and pretty impressive wave riding.

Leading the charge after one event, west-side local Kamu Auwae will look to tack on more mileage points in both pro and SUP divisions as event one longboard winner Kalama is away in Tahiti.

For weekend warrior Auwae, the satisfaction of being able to compete on weekends while holding down a five day a week job makes thing sweet and in having the best of both worlds, expect some solid results from the local-boy waterman.

As for the waves, according to contest director Wendall Aoki, "As long as there is surf, we will run," knowing that all these competitors can work magic on the waters at the Flies surf break.

An "On/Off" decision will be made on Saturday, May 31st at 7:00 A.M. regarding the event. If it runs, amateur divisions will compete on Sunday.

Results to follow.
